Laylat ul Qadr (The Night of Power)

Laylat ul Qadr is a special night for Muslims all over the world. It is the night of power  when Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran to Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him). We do not know the exact date of Laylat ul Qadr, we only know that it one of the last 10 days of MONTH OF Ramadan. It is the odd numbered night ( 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th). This night is very special because it is said to be worth as much as 1000 months or 83 years. The angels come down from the heavens and are among us, although we cannot see them. Muslims carry out lots of acts of worship during the last 10 days of Ramadan in the hope of gaining the blessings of the night of power.

Laylat ul Qadr is considered the holiest night of the year for Muslims. It is known as the “Night of Power”. One of these days, the holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him). The holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) did not mention exactly when the Night of Power would be, although most scholars believe it falls on one of the odd-numbered nights of the final 10 days of month of Ramadan.

In the Quran, Allah mentions the importance of this night:
“Indeed, we revealed the Quran during the night of Decree. And what can make you know what the night of decree is? The night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Quran 97:1-5)

Importance of this Night

The word “Qadr” in Laylat ul Qadr as destiny or decree. This meant that this was the night in which a person’ssustenance, lifespan and other critical matters would be sealed for the coming year. Hazrat Abdullah ibne Abbas ( may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“it is written in Umm -al Kitab ( the heavenly copy of Quran) during Laylat ul Qadr what shall come to pass in the following year of good and evil, sustenance and lifespan. Even the pilgrimage of the pilgrim (shall be decided) , it will be said ‘so and so will perform pilgrimage’(on this night).”

The significance of the night of Decree described by Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) as remembered by his companions:

“Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Power out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari Vol 1,book 2:34)

How to Observe the Golden Night

Muslims observe this occasion with study, devotional reading of Holy Quran verses and prayers, as the night of holiness is believed to make it a very good time for prayers to be answered. The last ten days of month of Ramadan are considered a particularly spiritually important time, as any of the days may be Laylat al Qadr, worshippers strive to be especially observant during this period. Some Muslims participate in a spiritual retreat called Itikaaf where they spend all 10 days in the mosque reading the Quran and praying.

What one does while seeking out Laylat ul Qadr will vary from person to person? Praying the Isha prayer, the night of prayer and the Fajr prayer, the prayer at dawn, in congregation is important as is every minute in between. Some will then stand for hours in rital prayers. Others will read or listen to the Holy Quran being recited. Some will sit with their hands raised to the skies with tears falling from their eyes as their hearts tremble out of devotion.

The Holy Prophet ( peace be upon Him) said:

“ A pleasant Night, neither hot nor cold. The sun in the morning is a weak red.”
