International days are marked to educate the public on issues of concern, to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. Each international day provides the community an opportunity to organize activities related to the theme and to create public awareness on the same.
International earth day is celebrated to remind us that the earth and its ecosystems provide us life and sustenance. It is celebrated to create harmony between the nature and the earth to attain balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity. It gives us an opportunity to enhance public awareness around the world to the challenges that are related to the well-being of planet and all the life it supports.

History of world earth day
Gaylord Nelson, the US senator in the year 1962 was inspired by the Vietnam War or the “teach ins” that was taking place on college campuses around the United States. In the year 1969 Gaylord Nelson who was also an environment activist created the idea of earth day and announced the earth day concept at a conference in Seattle.
On the first Earth day April 22, 1970 rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and many other American cities. The first earth day was successful in creating awareness on environment issues and transforming the public attitude. The international Earth day became nationwide in 1990 and was celebrated in 141 nations under the leadership od Dennis Hayes. It was renamed by United Nations as international Mother Earth day in the year 2009.

Main objective
April 22, 2020 indicates the 50 years of earth day. Earth day aims at educating more than a billion people to grow and support the next generation of environmental activities. It is to engage the citizens to mobilize and take action in the worldwide event by volunteering in various activities like clean ups and other campaigns. To provide education on the environment pollution and need for protecting the earth.
Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and life-support systems that make our world habitable. There is no country that is experiencing the drastic effects of climate change.

In COVID-19 outbreak
The pandemic has set a closure to most of the ongoing activities across the world, but earth day is not one of them. Organizers  of the earth day has  turned this 50th year of earth day into first ever digital earth day. All the activities planned for global mobilization will happen online. Online teaching materials and other toolkits are also made available by earth day organization so that the materials can be shared online and the spread of awareness can still be continued. The earth day organization has provided various opportunities to citizens to take part in this year’s Digital earth day celebrations.
During this quarantine, the food we are eating a lot  at home but still food waste occurs. Waste food is actually a big chunk of what goes to the landfills. We should compost that waste instead of putting in a landfill.

How to observe this day
Tree plantation is one of the best method to celebrate this day. Flowering plants can be fun to celebrate this day. You can plant your trees in your backyards. Single plant plantation can save hundreds of living beings.
Prepare a plastic consumption tracker which identify the usage of plastic at home and minimize the usage. Dispose off your garbage and waste properly, do not throw it out. Use public transport or share a ride more often instead of your personal motors or cars. Keep car, motorcycle, and other engines properly tuned. Be sure that your tires are properly inflated. It helps in reduces the air pollution level. Reduce or eliminate fireplace and wood stove use. Avoid burning leaves, trash, and materials. Avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Make pledge online and take action, also spread awareness. Raise awareness online, conduct surveys to check the pollution extent around. Engage students in science experiments to combat pollution. Make a call to action to share on social media. Create a video presentation to urge others to take action. Spread knowledge to others through online sessions and other online activities.
